The Curse of 'Mokhtar Dahari'

There is any kind of curse in this world? Most people must not believe about those kinds of things. Yes, it is true we can curse something as we please. But is it really happening? That is what I like to express here and let all of you my reader to make a deep thought about it. Before I start any further about ‘The Curse of Mokhtar Dahari’, I better off give out some introduction about late Mokhtar Dahari. I know many people out there that have not been heard about his name before. Actually he is already passed away 17 years ago. It may not nice to talk about someone that already passed away, but I have no bad intentions when writing this story. I just want to share something that seems to be related between him and football in Malaysia.

Back to the introduction about him, he is a great football player have ever lived in Malaysia and also known as ‘Supermokh’ by the local here. There is no one can take his place in the field and until now, no other football player in Malaysia can compare to him. He was one of the best players in Asia in 1970s. In international games, he helped the Malaysia national football team score a total of 125 goals in 167 caps.

The question here is why Malaysia football team today is so weak compare to the olden days. Normally, everything will always getting better from time to time. This is where I would like to relate the curse that Mokhtar Dahari made in his life. Well, hard for me to say whether it is true or not because I cannot get the authentic evidence out of this matter. From what I heard, a rumour told he said that Malaysia football industry will never make a progress because back in the days, Malaysia refuses to send their football team to a World Cup tournament. There also a rumour said that Malaysia football team will be at the same level as long as Mokhtar Dahari was not crowned by any title like ‘Datuk’ or ‘Tan Sri’. Sometimes, I also wonder why the local government did not give him any title even he has praise the name of Malaysia in the world of sports. An addition to that, I’m very disappointed with Football Association Malaysia which did not take any action to reminisce about him. If ‘Bacaan tahlil’ ceremony could be held for artist like Sudirman, P. Ramlee and etc, why not the same thing for our late Mokhtar Dahari.

I know it may not make sense to some people but we could not put any possibility aside even it may sound silly. Just think about it, Mokhtar Dahari is a legend and has strived Malaysia football team until international. The question is where is his title or ownership? He should be awarded with ‘Datuk’ or ‘Tan Sri’ but until now, he has not gained any. This may be the curse of Mokhtar Dahari where the performance of Malaysia football team is nowhere to be proud of. Think about it…
